Our Route 66 Daily Journal: October 21, 2026

Today we took a side trip on the Grand Canyon Railway to the Grand Canyon and back to Williams, AZ.

Before heading to the train depot, we got coffee at Brewed Awakenings Coffee in downtown Williams.

Due to lightning there was no Wild West show prior to departure, but at least the rain let up while we boarded the train to the Grand Canyon.

When we arrived at the Grand Canyon National Park it was pouring, but we still walked to the shuttle stop to take the shuttle to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center for the America 250 stamp. We didn’t take any photos there, though, as there wasn’t much visible and they were under a tornado warning.

After taking the shuttle back to the train depot, we got some more national park stamps at Verkamp’s Visitor Center.

At this point, we managed to see a little bit of the Grand Canyon between clouds.

We walked out to the Kolb Studio planning to get more stamps, but they closed due to the weather shortly before we got there.

Before going back to the train, we sat on one of the porches of the El Tovar Hotel. At one point, it cleared up some to see the canyon more.

We took some photos with the train before boarding for the trip back to Williams.

When we returned to Williams, we again stayed in the caboose at Canyon Motel and RV Park (photo from the day before when it wasn't raining!).
