Our Route 66 Daily Journal: October 2, 2026

Today we left Oklahoma City on Route 66, visited Yukon, and ended our day west of El Reno.

Our first stop of the day was to take photos of the Lake Overholser Bridge.

Nearby we found the Bethany-Oklahoma City Route 66 Centennial Monument.

We then drove over the bridge and went to Route 66 Park, which has a cool map of Route 66, although it has not held up well over 20 years with the info signs all faded away.

In Yukon, we stopped to take photos with their Route 66 Centennial Monument.

We also found the Yukon Route 66 Community Unifier Statue.

Next we planned to visit Vladislava’s Czech Bakery & Cafe in Yukon, but it was closed in preparation of the town's Czech festival tomorrow. Instead we ended up getting coffee at Coffeeslingers.

We then visited the Yukon Chamber of Commerce for the Oklahoma Route 66 passport stamp and also got a nice sticker from them.

As we still had time until where we wanted to eat lunch opened, we drove around Yukon to take photos of the Chisholm Trail Mural and also tried to find the Chisholm Trail Marker mentioned in the one guidebook, but failed to find it before it was time for lunch.

We had lunch at Green Chile Kitchen Rt 66.

After lunch, we headed to El Reno. Our first stop here was to take photos of the El Reno Route 66 Statue.

We also found the El Reno Centennial Monument nearby.

Next we stopped at the The Filling Station Visitors Center & Gift Shop.

We then enjoyed visiting the Canadian County Museum, which is mainly housed in an old train staton, but also includes some other area historical buildings that have been moved to the complex.

Next we made a quick stop at the El Reno Chamber of Commerce for the stamp in the Oklahoma Route 66 passport.

We had planned to go bowling next, but the bowling alley was not opened, so instead we headed to check in at the KOA. On the way we pulled into Fort Reno briefly, but did not end up going to the museum because it was closing in 20 minutes.

After unloading and making our beds in the kabin, we headed back to El Reno to get dinner at Sid's Diner - one of the spots for the El Reno Onion Burger stamp in the Oklahoma Route 66 passport.

After dinner, we bowled a game at El Reno Bowl.

On the way back to the kabin, we stopped at the Cherokee Trading Post and saw the live buffalo.

Today was spent exploring Oklahoma City including Oklahoma State Capitol building, Oklahoma History Center, National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, and finding Route 66 Centennial Monuments.

We got our morning coffee at Toast & Coffee (actually my second cup as Dad went and got my birthday freebie at Starbucks to have with breakfast at the hotel).

Next we explored the Oklahoma State Capitol, where we also redeemed for the first three keychains for the sections we have already completed in the Oklahoma Route 66 Passport.

We then visited the Oklahoma History Center, where we mainly focused on the Route 66 exhibit and definitely plan to come back and more fully explore it when we return to Oklahoma City for 2028 Olympic softball.

Our next stop was at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.

We then visited the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, which is another museum we only ended up doing parts of and we plan to more fully see in 2028.

As we left the museum, we stopped at the Kicks 66 statue. We then drove to the First Americans Museum and Dad went in to get the stamp for the Oklahoma Route 66 Passport, but we did not visit as it was only 30 minutes until it closed, so another museum we plan to visit in 2028.

On the way to our next stop, I took pictures of the Warr Acres Route 66 Centennial Monument in the median.

I also took pictures of the Bethany Route 66 Centennial Monument, which we later realized says Warr Acres on the other side (the other Warr Acres one is the same on both sides).

Our next stop was for the NW OKC Chamber & Route 66 Visitor Center in Bethany, which was actually at a nearby store. Nearby we also stopped at Not Cho Cheesecake to pick up some cheesecake to have for dessert later.

On the way back to the hotel, we drove around to find the rest of the Route 66 Centennial Monuments in Oklahoma City - Britton District and 39th Street District.
